SUBJECT: Visualize Your Goals

Greetings and Happy Autumn!

As the changing colors of the leaves remind us of the onward march of Father Time, we thought we’d touch on the importance of setting long-term, specific goals - whether you’re just starting out in Dentistry or ready to take those first steps toward retirement.

Napoleon Hill - in his timeless bestseller Think and Grow Rich - wrote, “If you can conceive it, you can achieve it.” These words are as true today as when he wrote them over eighty years ago. One of the themes which runs throughout not only Hill’s book, but thousands of self-help and goal-setting volumes over the years, is the need to actually envision what you want. This mental (and – more importantly – written) exercise serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it’s just plain fun. Our hopes and dreams and plans for the future are rarely less than motivating and inspiring. Secondly – and practically more vital – is that such visions require specifics. It’s not enough to say you want to be successful and happy, or that you want to retire comfortably – we all do; actually visualizing where you want to be in five years, ten years, or a lifetime from now is a step which necessitates envisioning the myriad of steps which come before.

In the early eighties, Peter Drucker’s “Management by Objective” concept used the SMART acronym for goal-setting. It was later expanded upon. That’s right, it got SMARTER. Mr. Hill would have approved, we think!

Specific—Set specific attainable goals and write them down.

Meaningful—Set goals that will encourage you to do what it takes to achieve..

Achievable—Goals must be achievable given current and available resources.

Relevant—Set goals that are in line with what you want out of life (or business).

Time-bound—Set a specific timeframe during which the goals will be achieved.

Evaluate—Goals must be quantifiable to measure success and stay on track.

Readjust—Evaluate progress and readjust approach as needed.

The trick, of course, is how to specifically apply this wisdom to your Dental Practice, or Dental Career. Oftentimes we stumble just deciding which goals to set. GPP, Inc. is here to help you hone your vision and avoid missteps, regardless of how far you are along the path. Throughout our fifty years of creating relationships and building bridges, we’ve helped shape and fine-tune many dreams, offering an experienced perspective which is itself based upon our ever-present goal of putting people together to achieve success for all.

If you’re thinking of selling your practice – whether to retire or just so you can focus on being a Dentist – we encourage you to take our Sellers Quiz. It’s quick, easy, and totally confidential. Or maybe there’s a way we can help we haven’t thought of yet. Please let us know!

Sincerely,
