Why DSOs Are Your Friend
by GPP, Inc.
Once upon a time in this honored and age-old profession, change was, for the most part, welcome. Sure, it was sometimes pricy, but generally accepted as inevitable, and another means of improving the profession overall. A better way to help people. These changes, while sometimes ground-breaking, were still just renovations and improvements to an existing structure. The Dental Profession itself remained at its foundation the same - it just replaced the ceiling fans and furnaces with central heat and air, installed new windows, paved the driveway, and got cable.
Now – to paraphrase Joni Mitchell – they’re paving paradise and putting up parking lots. And apartment buildings.
Well, not exactly. But the business model of Dentistry – the structure itself – is indeed transforming into what, for this profession, is analogous to multi-unit dwellings. Condos, perhaps. It’s happening across the board, from physicians, to pharmacists to hardware stores, to hair salons to retail stores, to restaurants to cell phone providers. The private dental practice, like “Bill’s Barbering and Sandwich Emporium,” is on its way out.
Please don’t think we’re making light of this serious situation. We’re not, and here’s why:

DSOs are a good thing.
There. We said it. There’s a reason DSOs are projected to have as much as 30% of the marketplace by 2021. And, despite our inclinations to assume the contrary, it’s not just a matter of the pervasive air of corporate greed in this country – to which we’ve sadly grown accustomed. The reason we welcome the DSOs is that they will ultimately help more people.
It’s a matter of math, mainly, mixed with a myriad of machinations which seem to take the people part out of the equation, but which in the end is just one step toward what many experts forecast as a gradual but inevitable integration of dental and health services - a simultaneous streamlining and expansion geared toward both efficiency and effectiveness. Which will help more people.
Profitability and adherence to principles are not mutually exclusive concepts, and many of the means by which DSOs increase the former markedly improve the latter. As Dental Professionals are allowed to focus on dentistry (and, likewise, accountants on accounting, insurance specialists on insurance, marketing professionals on marketing…the list goes on), real-life numbers show that people are happier, healthier, and – in general - wealthier. This is no longer theory. This is what happens, and it’s happening all over the world. And it helps more people.
No matter the logic, no matter how reasonable this all sounds (and is), it’s also quite easy to get bogged down in the mechanics, the means by which great concepts becomes actions and results. To a Dentist in private practice his or her whole life, it’s easy to be daunted by the scope of a change which seems overwhelming. Rest easy - there are specific, incremental steps along this path, all of which have been taken by others on their respectively-unique journeys. Goodie Professional Practices, Inc. has been studying and facilitating these journeys from the beginning.
In future articles, we’ll go into some of these steps more specifically. In the meantime, here are some (but by no means all) of the articles we perused when writing this piece. If you’d like to share an article, please send us a comment with the link!
